Visiting Europe in 2024? Here is all the information you require on the new documentation standards.

TAMPA, Florida - In 2024, a passport alone won't be sufficient to enter 30 European states, including well-known tourism hotspots like Greece, Italy, and France.

The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) authorization is required for travelers.

Clint Henderson, managing editor of The Points Guy, explained, "They're just pre-screening you, making sure you're not a security threat, or you're not going to overstay your visa, or you're trying to emigrate illegally."

The European Union states that once the application is open, you can apply via either its web portal or mobile application.

Travelers must apply by providing their date of birth, parent's names, current employment, and history of criminal convictions. In addition, a passport that doesn't expire in less than three months will be needed.

The permission costs seven euros, or roughly eight dollars, in total, but it is free for those over 70 and under 18.

Travelers are permitted to stay in Europe for up to 90 days during any six-month period with this license, which is valid for three years.

Although the State Department reports that passport processing now takes 10 to 13 weeks, trawlers who require their passports sooner can expedite the process.

"It is imperative that you pay for accelerated service. Spend the additional sixty dollars to expedite it. Pay for the two-day shipping as well. The additional $18 will be necessary," Henderson remarked.

If you're traveling within two weeks, call the National Passport Information Center for an appointment or contact your Congress member. Henderson says the authorization process is relatively simple.

"It's your personal information, where you're traveling, some of our travel history. It's not terribly complicated and takes about 10 minutes," Henderson said.

The European Union has yet to release the exact date when the application process will open, only saying that it will be required beginning in 2024.

Once approved, the ETIAS authorization will be linked to your passport, which is how airport security will know whether you've gotten the authorization.
